From Inspiration to Ice Dye: The Story Behind the Three Sisters Hoodie
From Inspiration to Ice Dye: The Story Behind the Three Sisters Hoodie
Every piece I create begins with an idea.
For this design, I wanted to capture the beauty of one of Australia's most iconic landscapes — the Three Sisters in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales.
Rather than creating another colourful hoodie, my goal was to use colour to tell a story inspired by the mountains, eucalyptus forests, sandstone cliffs and the famous blue haze that makes this region so recognisable.
Finding Inspiration in the Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains are renowned for their towering sandstone escarpments, expansive eucalyptus forests and the distinctive blue haze that stretches across the valleys.
Standing before the Three Sisters, you're surrounded by layers of colour created by nature itself. Warm sandstone rises above deep green forests before fading into soft blues, purples and distant horizons.
Those natural colours became the foundation for this hoodie.
Translating Nature Into Dye
Each section of the design was planned to reflect a different element of the Blue Mountains landscape.
Eucalyptus Forests
The lower section features rich green tones inspired by the eucalyptus forests that blanket the valleys surrounding the Three Sisters.
Sandstone Cliffs
Golden sandstone highlights were added to represent the rugged cliffs and rock formations that define this unique landscape.
Blue Mountain Haze
The turquoise and blue sections were inspired by the famous blue haze created by millions of eucalyptus trees releasing fine oil droplets into the atmosphere.
Twilight Sky
The upper portion of the hoodie incorporates deep blues, violets and magentas inspired by the colours often seen across the mountains during sunrise and sunset.
Why Ice Dye?
Ice dye is a process that embraces unpredictability.
As the ice melts, the dyes travel through the fabric in unexpected ways, creating colour splits, textures and patterns that can never be perfectly controlled or repeated. This ensures that every Dye My World garment is completely one of a kind.
Bringing the Three Sisters Hoodie to Life
Once the colour palette was planned, the hoodie was marked out and dyed using separate colour zones to represent the different elements of the landscape.
The photographs below show the complete journey from powder placement and ice application through to the 24-hour melt, first unfold, final rinse and finished garment.
While the final hoodie does not replicate the original concept image exactly, it successfully captures the atmosphere and colours that inspired the design. The eucalyptus greens, sandstone tones, blue mountain haze and twilight purples all emerged through the natural movement of the dyes during the ice dye process.
This is one of the things I enjoy most about ice dye. The concept provides the direction, but the melting ice ultimately creates its own unique interpretation.
Hand-Dyed in Sydney, Australia
Every Dye My World garment is individually hand-dyed by me in Sydney, Australia.
The Three Sisters Hoodie represents the first piece in my Australian Inspired Designs collection and serves as a wearable interpretation of one of Australia's most iconic natural landmarks.
No two garments will ever be exactly alike, ensuring that each piece remains as unique as the landscape that inspired it.

After 24 hours beneath the ice, rinsing, washing and drying, the Three Sisters Hoodie was complete. While the final result developed differently from the original concept, the eucalyptus greens, sandstone tones, blue mountain haze and twilight purples all emerged naturally through the ice dye process. As with every Dye My World garment, this piece is completely one of a kind and hand-dyed in Sydney, Australia.
