Fire & Ash – Creating Flowing Ribbons with a Loose Spiral Ice Dye
Inspired by Fire, Smoke and Movement
Every hand-dyed garment begins with an idea. For Fire & Ash, I wanted to explore the dramatic contrast between glowing embers, drifting smoke and deep charcoal tones while continuing to develop my signature loose spiral ice-dye technique.
Rather than chasing a perfectly symmetrical spiral, my goal was to create flowing ribbons of colour that naturally radiate from the centre of the garment, allowing gravity and melting ice to shape the final artwork.
The Design Concept
The colour palette was inspired by the elements of fire itself.
Rich reds and fiery oranges represent glowing embers, while black dye was used to create the smoky ash that surrounds the heat. As the ice slowly melted, the black naturally separated into charcoal greys and subtle blue undertones, creating movement and texture that simply can't be achieved with traditional dyeing methods.
Every fold, every colour transition and every streak was created naturally during the ice-dye process.
Creating the Spiral
This garment was created using a loose spiral rather than a tightly wound traditional spiral.
After soaking the T-shirt in a soda ash solution, the fabric was gently twisted into shape and placed over an inverted colander. Thin lines of professional fibre-reactive dye were carefully applied before a second colander was placed over the spiral to hold the ice.
As the ice slowly melted, gravity carried the dissolved dyes through the folds of the fabric, producing the flowing ribbons that define this piece.
Watching the Colours Develop
One of the most rewarding parts of ice dyeing is watching the colours evolve over time.
Immediately after batching and the first reveal, the colours appeared much darker and more intense because the garment was still wet and contained excess unreacted dye.
After rinsing, washing and drying, the excess dye was removed, revealing the permanent colours that had chemically bonded to the cotton fibres. Although the final artwork becomes softer and more refined after washing, the flowing movement created during the ice-dye process remains.
This is why every Dye My World garment is photographed only after it has been completely washed and dried, ensuring customers see the true finished colours before purchasing.
What I Learned
Every garment teaches me something new, and Fire & Ash was no exception.
The loose spiral produced exactly the flowing ribbons I had hoped for, with dramatic movement radiating from the centre of the design. The way the black dye separated into smoky greys became one of my favourite features of the finished piece.
The project also gave me ideas for my next experiment by showing how different spiral tension and dye placement can influence the movement of colour throughout the garment.
